Greater Manchester Oral Histories

This is a composite collection created by the North West Sound Archive. It’s a real treasure trove of all kinds of oral history recordings, mainly held on cassette, minidisc and CD. We transferred many of the minidiscs and some of the CDs during lockdown in 2020.

The collection contains one-off oral history interviews conducted by the North West Sound Archive and interviews from a range of oral history projects across Greater Manchester including:

First job at 14 working in the Co-operative library in Bury
Recall how they had a bath before indoor bathrooms in their home on Crow Lane, Ramsbottom
Shops on Crow Lane, Ramsbottom
On lining up for school and the importance of cleanliness and health
Talks about joining the Manchester Regiment
His first day and training at the barracks in Ashton
How his education was different as he was born into a military family at Ladysmith barracks
Recalls layout of the barracks
Further description of the barracks and number of families living there
