Cumbria OUTreach

CELEBRATE: LGBT History in Cumbria was a partnership project between OutREACH Cumbria and Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery, funded by Heritage Lottery Fund. The aim was to explore the history of the LGBT community in Cumbria, a predominantly rural area.

This is a collection of 30 oral history interviews featuring well-known events and individuals, as well as the life stories of everyday people and their friends and family. The project booklet, a series of photographs, and a selection of lesbian and gay newspapers and local newspaper cuttings are also held at Carlisle Archive Centre.

A Celebrate exhibition was held at Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery in Autumn 2016, to showcase and explore the history of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Trans (LGBT) people in Cumbria.

Thanks to Emma Haggerstone, one of our volunteers, who made the audio clips for this playlist.

The full length interviews and summaries will be available at Carlisle Archive Service in due course.
