North West Recordings

Original recordings and non-commercial releases by Greater Manchester musicians, choirs, groups and orchestras held on 26 reels, 12 compact cassettes and 22 CDs.

Lots of people say they have an eclectic music collection. Well this really is eclectic. It includes everything from male voice choirs to brass bands, organ music to John Cooper Clarke.

The collection includes one of the earliest recordings digitised by Unlocking Our Sound Heritage in Manchester – a recording of the Glen Gray jazz band made at Johnny Roadhouse’s studio on Oxford Road in 1947.

One of the most evocative is a CD of early 1980s band the Liggers performing in Manchester.

This haunting clip comes from a performance of Requiem by the Hallé orchestra.

You can listen to these recordings and many more at Manchester Central Libtrary. British Library reference: UAP005. Local reference: GB124.NWRECS.
